| The senechal court tribunal of Rennes | |

This tribunal is also known as the ducal (then royal court) and was located in Rennes. The last building of this office still exists and forms the right wing of the present city hall of Rennes.
The greatest part of the archives are named office certificates and are kept nearby. They have been destroyed in the big blaze of 1720. The utilization of these readings allows the exploration of more than 18 000 documents. This register covers more 3/4 of the current departement of Ille et Vilaine, the East of Côtes d'Armor (e.g Lamballe, Quessoy), some parishes in East Morbihan, (e.g Campénéac, Malensac) and some parishes in departement of Loire Atlantique (e.g Châteaubriand, Guéméné Penfao) The draft minutes provide the names of the persons concerned. You can sometimes find filiations and/or professions, the dates and types of the certificates, the communes and the old reference number in the departement archives of Ille et Vilaine. The seeker should ask the room chairperson for the correspondence table in order to find the present reference number. |

| The seigniorial jurisdiction : | |

Secular or ecclesiastical seigniories had an administration and justice with 3 levels according to their importance: low, medium, and high. Officers such as the senechal (only judge), the notary and clerk gave judgements in accordance with custom and drafted daily life certificates (lawsuits, guardianships, marriage certificates, inventory after deaths, etc.)
Many of the seigniories archive funds have been destroyed or scattered in auctions or kept acoording to family alliances in areas remote from where they originate. Available readings gather descriptions of the certificates from large seigniories in Saint Malo, Rennes, Fougères and Vitré areas from medium sized seigniories and many traces of jurisdictions and clerk's offices affiliated with smaller seigniories , fiefs and bailliwicks which are now scattered all over the current departement of Ille et Vilaine. |
